France is mourning today as 12 journalists were murdered at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo’s Paris headquarters in Le Marais, by two terrorists who run away claiming they had avenged the prophet Mohammed. The French title is well-known for its topical illustrated covers which openly criticize religions but also society, politicians and celebrities. Among the victims are Stephane Charbonnier, editor of the magazine also known as “Charb, Jean Cabut, Georges Wolinski, Bernard Maris, Michel Renaud and Bernard Verlhac. Soon after the attack the hashtag #JeSuisCharlie (#IamCharlie) was used across all social media and gatherings took place tonight in France’s major cities as well as abroad, in remembrance of the victims and as a demonstration that the country is not afraid and will fight for its free press.
